Course Overview:
Our Manual Handling Instructor training course, to be delivered in Limerick as a five - day public programme is designed for individuals within companies who wish to become manual handling instructors or risk assessors.
Having an in-house instructor and risk assessor ensures that your organisation is constantly vigilant in identifying and removing manual handling hazards. It can also help to reduce costs by avoiding the need to recruit external trainers for staff training.
Our Manual Handling Instructor programme is also available for delivery as a Customised In-Company Course at clients premises nationwide in Ireland, including Dublin, Cork, Limerick & Galway.

Course Contents:
As back pain affects almost 80% of the population at some stage in their lives, the knowledge that can be passed on by an instructor can benefit everybody in your organisation, encouraging them to live safer and healthier lives.
A safer and healthier workforce means reduced absenteeism and this benefits everybody.This training course is designed not just to impart knowledge; we try to instil in our participants a “way of thinking”, where safety is not just an exercise but a lifestyle which can be applied in all aspects of work and home life.
Day 1: Intro - Legislation, Ergonomics & Risk Management
This session introduces participants to the course and explains the role and function of Manual Handling Instructors within the organisation. Legislation surrounding manual handling is explained in detail including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations, 2007. Risk Identification, assessment and control are fundamental principles behind current legislation. On completion of this section, candidates will understand the application of ergonomics as a tool for reducing manual handling risks.
Day 2: Presentation/Teaching Skills – Train the Trainer
The aim of this section is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to present effectively. Participants will learn about leadership skills, listening skills, effective communications and the psychology of learning. They will have the opportunity to put their acquired knowledge into practise in short presentations which will be evaluated.
Day 3: Anatomy and Physiology
On completion of this section, participants will have a thorough understanding of the mechanics of injury and will be able to explain how injuries can occur through poor manual handling practice.
Day 4: Revision and Practical Work
Candidates will be given direction in terms of the structure and content of their training day. Workshops and scenarios are used.
Day 5: Assessment
Practical and written assessments will be conducted on this day.
At Course Completion:
- Understand how various forces/postures affect the back
- Identify manual handling hazards in the workplace
- Implement and maintain safer working measures
- Understand the principles of safe lifting and apply them
- Be able to design and implement an in-house training programme which will be specific to your organisational needs.
